History & Milestones — Part 4. This installment looks back at the hotel-opening announcement of January 16, 2023. Opening-era room details and amenity plans below are historical information, not a promise of services or prices today. Sources rechecked October 12, 2026.
Pickering Casino Resort did not arrive as a finished visitor experience on a single opening day. The City dates the casino’s opening to July 2021. A separate milestone followed on January 16, 2023, when Great Canadian Entertainment announced that the property’s 275-room hotel was open and accepting reservations. Separating those dates helps explain the resort’s development: the gaming operation came first, while overnight accommodation expanded the ways visitors could use the site. What the hotel added in January 2023
In its opening announcement, the operator described 275 guest rooms, including 33 suites with separate living space and 22 accessible rooms. The published room-size range was 388 to 775 square feet. Those are useful details of the original hospitality offering; they should not be read as confirmation of the room type or accessibility features available for a particular booking today. The change was more than a new room count. The announcement paired accommodation with meeting and event space, catering and entertainment, explicitly addressing business and leisure visitors. For someone tracing the site’s history, that marks the shift from a place to visit for part of a day toward a property that could also accommodate an overnight stay or a meeting trip. It does not, by itself, establish how many visitors stayed, how long they remained or what they spent.
An opening announcement was not a completion certificate
The same announcement makes the phased rollout clear. It identified some restaurants as already open, while describing five additional restaurants and amenities including a pool, fitness facilities and a business centre as still to come. It also said The Arena’s first live event was planned for January 28. These were the operator’s January 2023 plans, not evidence that every promised amenity was operating on the hotel’s announcement date. Source: the announcement’s resort highlights.
This distinction matters when reading older travel information. A room-opening notice, an entertainment schedule and a full resort launch can describe different stages of the same development. Treating all of them as one date obscures what a visitor could actually use at each stage. Our next installment will examine the Arena milestone separately.
Reading the history without booking from it
The January 2023 release included introductory booking offers and temporary fee waivers. Those were dated opening promotions, not current rates, and this article does not reproduce them as offers. Likewise, historical restaurant hours and planned amenities are not a current visitor guide.
For a visit now, consult the official Pickering destination page and the operator’s current property-access and operations notice before making arrangements. The latter lists temporary service changes during a labour disruption; its current hotel details should take precedence over a three-year-old opening announcement. Confirm room requirements and service availability directly with the hotel.
The historical takeaway is straightforward: July 2021 explains the casino’s beginning, while the January 2023 hotel announcement explains an important expansion into overnight hospitality. Keeping those milestones separate gives a clearer account of how the resort took shape.
