The Pickering casino murder charge has been laid against a 20-year-old man following the 2023 shooting death of security guard Michael Ferdinand. Durham Regional Police announced that the accused was arrested in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and returned to Durham Region after a nearly three-year investigation involving several Canadian police services.
The fatal shooting happened at approximately 5:05 a.m. on October 9, 2023, at Pickering Casino Resort, located at 888 Durham Live Avenue. Officers from Durham police’s West Division responded to reports of an armed person and found Ferdinand suffering from gunshot wounds.
Ferdinand, 34, was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre, where he later died. Police subsequently identified a 17-year-old boy as the suspect and obtained a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest.
Pickering Casino Murder Charge Announced After Arrest
Investigators located and arrested the accused in Saskatoon following an investigation that crossed multiple jurisdictions. On July 29, 2026, members of the Durham police homicide unit took custody of the suspect and returned him to Durham Region.
Police said the accused, now 20 and listed as having no fixed address, has been charged with second-degree murder. He was held for a bail hearing.
The charge is an allegation and has not been proven in court. The accused is presumed innocent unless found guilty.
Durham police thanked the Calgary Police Service, Saskatoon Police Service, Vancouver Police Department and Royal Canadian Mounted Police for assisting with the investigation. Police have not publicly provided further details about where or how the arrest was carried out.
Accused Was 17 at Time of Shooting
Although the accused is now an adult, he was 17 when the shooting occurred. His identity therefore remains protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Police previously received special judicial authorization to temporarily publish the suspect’s name and photograph. The first authorization was granted in November 2023, and another was granted in December 2025 while investigators continued searching for him.
Durham police said all agencies were required to remove photographs, videos and articles identifying the accused five days after each authorization was granted. Publishers and social-media users should not repost the previously released identity or images now that those temporary orders have expired.
Federal youth justice law generally prohibits publishing a young person’s name or any other information that could identify them as someone dealt with under the Act. That protection can continue even when the person has turned 18 by the time of arrest or court proceedings.
Investigation Followed Canada-Wide Search
The case remained active for almost three years. Police continued issuing appeals for information and, in December 2025, Durham Regional Crime Stoppers announced a $25,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest.
Investigators have not announced whether the reward was claimed. Police also have not released a suspected motive or described the circumstances that led to the confrontation inside the casino.
The July arrest represents a significant development, but police continue asking witnesses and anyone with relevant information to contact the homicide unit.
