Pickering Casino Resort

History & Milestones — Part 6. This is a look back at April 2023, not an announcement of an upcoming concert. Official sources rechecked November 2, 2026.

Pickering Casino Resort’s official grand-opening celebration brought together a concert and a community donation. In its April 27, 2023 account, Great Canadian Entertainment reported that Bryan Adams had performed the previous evening and that the festivities included a $50,000 donation from the resort to the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation. That places the celebration on April 26, 2023. Source: the operator’s grand-opening report.

A celebration, not the casino’s first day

The phrase “grand opening” needs context. The City of Pickering dates the casino’s opening to July 2021. Great Canadian announced the hotel’s opening on January 16, 2023. The April celebration therefore marked a later stage in the property’s development, rather than the beginning of all casino operations. City opening reference; January hotel announcement.

This distinction matters when tracing the resort’s history: an operating casino, a hotel opening and a ceremonial resort launch are separate milestones. Treating the April event as the property’s single opening date would erase the earlier phases.

The concert at the centre of the night

According to the April account, Adams performed at a sold-out Arena, which the operator described as a 2,500-seat venue. The report named “Cuts Like a Knife” and “Summer of 69” among the songs in the set. These are details of the operator’s historical account, not independently measured attendance figures or a description of today’s ticket inventory. Source: concert and opening-night account.

There is a chronology caveat. The January hotel release had said that The Arena would host its first live event on January 28, while the April report used first-performance language for the grand opening. An advance plan is not proof that an event happened, and these two statements do not establish a definitive first-show date. This installment therefore describes Adams’s appearance as the grand-opening concert, not unconditionally as the venue’s first concert. January plan; April retrospective.

What the $50,000 gift does—and does not—tell us

The operator reported the presentation of a $50,000 donation from Pickering Casino Resort to the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation during the festivities. That establishes the reported donor, recipient and amount. The release does not identify a particular piece of medical equipment or a completed hospital project funded by the gift, so it would be misleading to assign it to one. The gift should also be kept separate from municipal casino-hosting revenue. The City’s official explanation describes payments from OLG under a Municipal Contribution Agreement for hosting the casino. That is a different payment relationship from the resort-to-foundation donation described in the grand-opening report. Combining the two would obscure who paid whom and why. Reading opening-night coverage today

The enduring value of the April account is its record of a particular milestone: the resort publicly celebrated its expanded offering with a headline performance and a reported community gift. It is not a current operating guide. Restaurant schedules, amenities and event listings in opening-era coverage should not be assumed to remain available.

For current plans, consult The Arena’s official page and the operator’s operations updates. The next history installment will examine the dining rollout described in the resort’s early announcements.
